Northern England Golf Courses
· Formby Golf Course, Golfing Club
Unusually for a links, Formby does not have views of the sea. A pretty course, with a fine and hospitable clubhouse, it is a popular venue for amateur events.
· Ganton Golf Course, Golfing Club
Set in the heart of James Herriot country, Granton may be the most beautiful course in Britain.
· Hillside Golf Course, Golfing Club
Hillside has hosted many events including the British PGA. Many people rate the front nine to be the best stretch of holes on the Lancashire coast, while the back nine through the dunes are rated by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus to be as good as any nine in Britain.
· Royal Birkdale Golf Course, Golfing Club
The setting is among the dunes on the Irish Sea. Watson and Miller both won Opens here at Royal Birkdale, a course which has surprisingly level fairways for a links but large, undulating greens that invariably test the best.
· Royal Liverpool Golf Course, Golfing Club
On the south side of the Mersey, Hoylake - as the locals call it - has hosted ten Open Championships in the past
· Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Course, Golfing Club
Royal Lytham & St Annes is one of the hardest Open venues. Not a typical links course - having no actual view of the sea - but very much seaside in nature.
· Southport and Ainsdale Golf Course, Golfing Club
Southport and Ainsdale is another regular for qualifiers when the Open is in town, this excellent seaside links has hosted many championships including two Ryder Cup matches.

Southern England Golf Courses
· Burnham and Berrow Golf Course, Golfing Club
Concentrated in the south east, within easy reach of London and Gatwick Airport, are a cluster of fine courses with famous names, such as Sunningdale, Littlestone, Princes, Wentworth - which has hosted both the World match Play Championship and the Ryder Cup - and Royal St George's, a regular Open venue.
· Littlestone Golf Course, Golfing Club
This fine links course offers holes which increase in difficulty and challenge as the round progresses. Tight turf, deep bunkers, strong breezes - and, as you might expect, a homely clubhouse in which to relive your best shots.
· Princes Golf Course, Golfing Club
While used as an airfield in the Second World War, the old clubhouse was used for target bombing practice! "Like throwing darts at a Rembrandt", complained one distinguished military man. Princes is a former venue of the Open, the three nines offer quality links golf.
· Royal Cinque Ports Golf Course, Golfing Club
The last Open to be held at Royal Clinque Ports was in 1920 when George Duncan slipped past a faltering Abe Mitchell to win, but it remains a favourite for amateur tournaments, of which The Halford Hewitt is perhaps the best known.
· Royal St George Golf Course, Golfing Club
One of three south-east courses to hold the Open, Royal St George's is now the only Open venue south of Lancashire. The course demands long accurate drives and the greens are among the best in England.
· Rye Golf Course, Golfing Club
One of Harry Colt's most famous creations, Rye is unique. In some ways reminiscent of North Berwick and St Andrews, it offers quirky holes as well as conventional ones, always with fast, true greens featuring some unusual shapes and contours.
· Saunton Golf Course, Golfing Club
Of the 36 holes here, the East Course is the championship course and has been said by many to be of Open Championship calibre. Situated on the beautiful North Devon coast, between Saunton Sands and the Taw & Torridge estuary, Sauton is one of Englands most beautiful golf courses.
· Sunningdale Golf Course, Golfing Club
The setting for the Old and New courses is heathland in the charming Surrey countryside. The golf historian will enjoy the greens, which were the beginning of the modern undulating designs.
· The Belfry Golf Course, Golfing Club
Site of the 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2002 Ryder Cups, the Belfry is located in lovely parklands.
· Walton Heath Golf Course, Golfing Club
Another Ryder Cup venue, both Old and New courses at Walton Heath call for accurate tee shots and crisp iron play.
· Wentworth Golf Course, Golfing Club
There are three courses at Wentworth. The famous World Matchplay event always takes place on the West course, but the East and Edinburgh courses add the possibility of another 36 holes of excellent golf.
· Westward Ho! Golf Course, Golfing Club
Westward Ho! (or Royal North Devon) is the oldest seaside course in England. A classic, traditional links where grazing sheep still roam the course alongside the golfers!
