Northern Portugal Golf Courses
· Aroeira Golf Course, Golfing Club
Just over 10 miles south of Lisbon, Portugal the original golf course at Aroeira - which dates back to the 1970s - was designed by Frank Pennink with later revisions by Robert Trent Jones.
· Estoril Golf Course, Golfing Club
A pretty course, not overly long, with a charming clubhouse and strong golfing tradition. One of the oldest courses in the country, Estoril hosted the Portuguese Open between 1953 and 1972. Tight fairways set amongst eucalyptus, pine and mimosa trees and small greens demand accuracy rather than length.
· Penha Longa Golf Course, Golfing Club
Penha Longa, on the southern slopes of the Serra de Sintra to the west of Lisbon, offers 27 holes of fine golf at one of Portugal's finest resorts. The championship Atlantic Course affords views of both mountain and sea and is complemented by the 9-hole Monastery Course.
· Praia D'el Rey Golf Course, Golfing Club
Praia D'El Rey Golf & Country Club is a beachfront resort near the historic town of Óbidos, about a one hour drive north up the coast from Lisbon. Opened in 1997 the course is set partly in extensive pine forest and partly on links. Views over the Atlantic and Berlenga Islands.
· Quinta da Marinha Golf Course, Golfing Club
Quinta da Marinha is a championship golf course, located on the Estoril coast just west of Lisbon, was designed by Robert Trent Jones and is set in a private estate. A number of the holes offer wonderful views of the Atlantic while others face north towards the backdrop of the Sintra mountain range. A number of lakes also stud the course.
· Troia Golf Course, Golfing Club
Head south from Lisbon to the Costa Azul area and take a short ferry ride to Troia's peninsula setting. the course is considered one of the toughest tests in the country. Sand borders
the whole course and narrow fairways wend through pine woods to small greens.
Souththern Portugal Golf Courses
· Penina Golf Course, Golfing Club
The first course to be built in the Algarve, Penina was for many years the home of its creator, three-times British Open winner Sir Henry Cotton.
· Quinta do Lago Golf Course, Golfing Club
The #1 course, designed by William Mitchell, has a number of beautiful and challenging holes, culminating in the photogenic 15th. With a carry of 180 yards over water to a green framed by tall pines, this is the most-photographed hole in Portugal. The second course - Rio Formosa - is slightly more open and inland in character from its sister but constructed to the same standard
· San Lorenzo Golf Course, Golfing Club
San Lorenzo is considered one of the finest courses in Europe, the course winds through sandy forest with frequent glimpses of the ocean
· Vale do Lobo Golf Course, Golfing Club
Two excellent courses delight members and visitors alike here. The Royal is considered the senior partner but the Ocean Course is equally difficult. The scenic 7th hole on the Ocean Course, bordering redstone cliffs, is one of the most photographed holes in Europe.
· Vila Sol Golf Course, Golfing Club
Vila Sol GC has fast and true contoured greens, strong par 4s, picturesque short holes and the par five 6th signature hole make this a fascinating test.
· Vilamour Golf Course, Golfing Club
The venerable Old Course, Vilamour, now has two siblings, although #1 and #2 date from 1969 and were the work of Frank Pennink. A number of championships have been held here including Portuguese Opens and Ladies’ Amateur Championships.
