Wales Golfing Itineraries
Northern Wales Golf Courses
· Aberdovey Golf Course, Golfing Club
The Aberdovey golf Course in North Wales was a personal favorite of famous British golf writer Bernard Darwin. The golf course still retains a very traditional feel, with cattle sometimes
grazing on the first fairway, a railway line close by, miles of wonderful beach
and an enchanting small town with tidal estuary views
· Conwy Golf, Golfing Club
Conwy, North Wales is home to the Caernarvonshire Golf Club, which was founded in 1890. The golf course provides fine views of the Conwy estuary and surrounding hills are to be had from all parts of the course, which features a number of challenging par 4s and some delightful but tricky short holes.
· Nefyn & District
Golf, Golfing Club
Nefyn & District is a classic seaside holiday course. Much of the course runs along the cliff tops and holes 11 to 18 are perched on a
headland with outstanding views.
· North Wales Golf Course, Golfing Club
North Wales GC is in nearby Llandudno and dates from 1894, although James Braid made significant later revisions. Overlooking Conwy Bay, this is a challenging seaside links where the wind is usually a major factor.
· Royal St David's Golf Course, Golfing Club
Royal St David’s is by common consent the best course in North Wales - a classic links that curiously has no views of the sea other than from the elevated 16th tee.
Southern Wales Golf Courses
· Ashburnham Golf Course, Golfing Club
A classic links course, the Ashburnham golf course celebrated its centenary in 1994. Overlooking Carmarthen Bay the course's first two and final two holes are inland near the clubhouse.
· Celtic Manor Golf Course, Golfing Club
This outstanding resort complex, Celtic Manor, set in 1400 acres of rolling parkland near Newport, has three excellent courses - Roman Road, Coldra Woods and Wentworth Hills - the latter being home to the Wales Open and designated host for the 2001
Ryder Cup.
· Pennard Golf Course, Golfing Club
Pennard, west of Swansea, is an undulating seaside course with a fine pedigree and long history. It is also a favorite of golf writer James Finnegan, who praised its wild scenery and spectacular holes despite suffering ferocious winds when playing there.
· Pyle & Kenfig Golf Course, Golfing Club
Pyle & Kenfig was designed by Harry Colt in 1922. A rolling mixture of seaside links and downland the course provides a very stiff test on a windy day (which is most days!).
· Royal Porthcawl Golf Course, Golfing Club
Royal Porthcawl , which dates from 1891, was designed by Charles Gibson and the greens are considered to be some of the best in Britain. The layout ensures the player faces every point of the compass during the round.
· Southerndown Golf Course, Golfing Club
Southerndown, perched on a headland above the Ogmore River valley and Bristol
Channel, looks down on Porthcawl and has even better views. It also requires
shot-making of a high order to negotiate narrow, gorse-lined fairways in the
inevitable wind which accompanies play.
· Tenby Golf Course, Golfing Club
Tenby is the oldest club in Wales (1888) and a grand seaside links in the traditional manner. Hosted the Welsh Amateur Championship in 2002. C K Cotton designed the current layout.
