KINGSBARNS AND THE KINGDOMAn Old Course Re-createdIn our last newsletter we sang the praises of Kingsbarns, a superb new links just outside St Andrews. And, before anyone writes in to tell us that this is not a new links, yes, we do know that a course once existed here and that military wartime use destroyed the old holes. Architect Kyle Phillips told us recently, however, that all the old holes had disappeared without trace, so the design team effectively started from scratch. An indication of how the landscape had changed is that an old burn was rediscovered during earth moving operations, which had been hidden under eight feet of soil! The new course and clubhouse opened officially on July 17 2000, to coincide with Open Championship week at St Andrews. Green fees for 2001 are to be set at £105, which is high, but a reflection of the very positive feedback from visiting golfers and media reaction to the course. Talk of high world rankings and future tournament use is premature, but both are likely to happen in time. Immediate good news is the caddie service, which is already in place. At present, tee times are being shared by visitors and local golfers - Royal and Ancient Golf Club members, members of other St Andrews Golf Clubs and, indeed, members of other clubs in the Kingdom of Fife. No plans for club membership or season tickets have yet been announced. Substantial bookings have been taken for 2001 already so book as soon as you can! Before the First World War, Bernard Darwin had written of the frustration golfers felt over the 'crowding and waiting' on the Old Course at St Andrews. His solution was a recommendation to try Tom Morris's New Course. Nowadays, the solution may be to try Kingsbarns and some of the other excellent courses in Fife, still referred to as The Kingdom of Fife. Elie Elie, home of James Braid, is perhaps the best of the bunch - wonderful seaside turf, a run of excellent holes (especially between 9 and 13), fast, true greens, and a picturesque harbour and village into the bargain. Lundin Links Lundin Links, a few miles west of Elie, is also a great course. A true out-and-back links, Lundin has narrow fairways, fast greens, gorse and stiff sea breezes. Leven and Crail Leven adjoins Lundin and is a flatter course, arguably of lesser character but definitely of equal challenge, while Crail now has two courses. Crail Golfing Society is one of the oldest clubs in Scotland. The old Balcomie Links there is the most interesting, with wonderful views and unusual par 3's. The new course is more modern in character - longer, too - and ensures those wanting variety over a 36 hole day are not disappointed. Ladybank Not far away is Ladybank, a course with similarities to Carnoustie, but not quite so severe a test. It is a frequent venue for Open Championship qualifiers, and shares the same pedigree as Scotscraig at Tayport. St Andrews Bay Finally, two new courses are under development just outside St Andrews, which, like Peter Thomson's Dukes Course (Old Course Hotel), are tied to a hotel facility. |
