A-ROUND ST ANDREWS WITH AIG

Being a magnet for thousands of visitors each year and a university town, you would expect St Andrews to have restaurants and bars to suit every palate and price - and you'd be right.

Here are our 18 recommendations to the best watering holes in town. To help your budget we've fixed the pars as:

Par 3 - simple, cheerful, and inexpensive
Par 4 - middle of the range for price and choice
Par 5 - expect to pay for quality and service

Old Course Hotel (Par 5)

Popular with both guests and non-residents is the 4th floor Road Hole Bar & Grill, offering international cuisine and stunning panoramic views over the town, golf courses and sea. Also available is the Sands Restaurant on the ground floor - offering a more contemporary style of dining.

Jigger Inn (Par 3)

The Jigger InnThe old stationmaster's house next to the Old Course Hotel, remaining from the days before the hotel was built in the 1960s, when the railway still ran to St Andrews and the site was the depot. Little changed, this bar has heard many stories and you'll see caddies and visitors swapping a few more as they enjoy a drink after their round of golf.

St Andrews Links Clubhouse (Par 4)

Looking out over the St Andrews courses and the West Sands beach the clubhouse offers a wide range of dishes, including seafood and chargrilled steaks. Breakfast and light meals are served in the lounge, which has a relaxed and informal atmosphere - also ideal for drinks. Both golfers and non-golfers welcome.

Dunvegan (Par 3)

A lively bar 200 yards from the Old Course. A popular haunt for caddies as they grab a snack between rounds. Noisy entertainment some evenings. Many Americans find their way here as the picture of the owners with George Bush (Sr) and the "Stars n Stripes" flying over the entrance shows.

Catch (Par 4)

Situated down by St Andrews Aquarium, Catch, as the name suggests, offers a variety of fresh local seafood dishes, as well as catering for non-fish eaters. A small restaurant based on two floors, offering views of the coastline and overlooking the seashore.

St Andrews Golf Hotel (Par 5)

If roasted loin of Highland Venison with black pudding and apple and sage dressing is to your liking then this is for you. Relax in the elegant mahogany- panelled restaurant and enjoy the view of St Andrews Bay. You can also try one of the large range of malt whiskies on offer.

Ma Bell's (Par 3)

If you're looking to join the young student set then this lively pub is for you. Recently refurbished, it boasts a wide range of bottled beers, a varied menu offering good-sized portions and serves the best bacon rolls in town. Basement bar/bistro of the Golf Hotel - see above.

Russell Hotel (Par 4)

Friendly mix of locals and visitors talking golf (what else?) in this comfortable Victorian townhouse with warm welcome from owners Gordon and Fiona de Vries. Eat in the bar or restaurant. Popular dishes on the bar menu and good range of beers. Heading towards a Par 5 if you dine in the intimate oak-panelled Locker Room or main restaurant at the back.

Ziggys (Par 4)

Ziggys We complete the front nine just around the corner in Murray Place. Strictly for the young at heart with rock & roll memorabilia on the walls. Choose from a wide range of great priced steaks and burgers or opt for the "Green and Healthy Vegetarian Section".

The Inn on North Street (Par 4)

The Cidsin Restaurant serves a variety of dishes - from a selection of sandwiches to a sirloin steak, vegetarian haggis or venison. Enjoy your meal in the cosy, candlelit restaurant with its quiet atmosphere and baronial decor.

Brambles (Par 3)

Café Jannetta (Par 3)

The homemade soups and paninis are worth sampling at this popular café. The variety of cakes, desserts and sundaes, using their famous award-winning ice creams, can prove too much of a temptation!

The Byre Theatre (Par 4)

An increasingly popular café situated in the modernised Byre Theatre. The open plan layout lends itself to a lively atmosphere - created by the hustle and bustle of patrons enjoying a drink at the adjoining bar. The menu offers a selection of sandwiches and sumptuous hot dishes and comforting puddings. Also look out for the daily specials on the board.

Papa Joes (Par 4)

This large, centrally located restaurant is one of the newest restaurants in the town. On offer is an abundance of dishes including burgers, pastas, pizzas and steaks. The walls are adorned with lots of memorabilia, which make for interesting reading between courses.

The Doll's House (Par 4)

A bustling little restaurant in the heart of St Andrews. The two course fixed price lunch and early dinner menus are excellent value for money and make this a popular choice with the locals.

The Vine Leaf (Par 5)

The Vine LeafAlways in great demand so book early. Superb seafood, game and gourmet vegetarian cuisine. You have to try the Cullen Skink - a delicious traditional Scottish smoked haddock and cream soup. Great value two or three course fixed price menus.

Balaka Bangladeshi Restaurant (Par 5)

Highly rated in the Good Curry Guide, a top restaurant patronised by everyone from locals and university students to visitors, celebrities and even off-duty pros when tournaments are in town. Every conceivable type of dish from the East but the King Prawns are especially memorable.

The Grill Room (Par 4)

If you're looking for a fun place to eat, you've found it. This is a bright and lively restaurant serving a variety of dishes, including authentic Mexican recipes, in colourful surroundings and all at good value for money.
