NEW DEVELOPMENTS

St Andrews Links Trust, the organisation that manages the six public courses in St Andrews, has been actively trying to secure land for the building of a seventh course. Increased play over the past few years - from local golfers who live in or near the town and visitors - has led the Trust to project that further demand will not be satisfied by the current availability of 99 holes.

The anticipated site is 200 acres of rolling farmland to the south-east, adjacent to the new St Andrews Bay Resort (outline of course map below) and overlooking the town and sea.St Andrews - 7th course site A young Scottish golf course architect has been selected as designer of the new course. David McLay Kidd has already been responsible for the acclaimed Bandon Dunes in Oregon, Queenswood in Surrey and other courses in Hawaii, Ireland, Mallorca and Nepal. Yes, that's right - Nepal! Alan McGregor, General Manager of St Andrews Links, said David "has the right experience and knowledge, and his achievements in his career so far are very impressive. We are looking forward to working with him on this truly exciting new project". Assuming planning consent is forthcoming the new course will probably be open for play by 2006 at the earliest.

The St Andrews Bay Golf Resort and Spa officially opened in June 2001 and has now been awarded 5 star status by VisitScotland, Scotland's national tourist board. It joins the country's other three 5 star properties: Turnberry, Gleneagles and the Old Course Hotel. Located just a mile or so out of town on the coastal road the £50 million luxury development overlooks St Andrews and out over the North Sea towards Carnoustie and the Angus hills beyond. The hotel comprises more than 200 bedrooms - including 17 suites - with either sea or golf course view, two championship-length golf courses, three restaurants, spa, health club and indoor heated swimming pool. The Torrance Course marks the first design by former European Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance and all 18 holes were opened for play in September 2001. The Devlin Course, designed by veteran Australian Pro Bruce Devlin, is now also open for play and both courses are complemented by a new £2 million clubhouse.

The Gleneagles Hotel has invested £10 million in a new development. Braid House - named after five times British Open Champion James Braid who designed the King's and Queen's Courses at the 5 star resort - is a four storey building comprising 59 deluxe bedrooms and four high-tech meeting rooms, linked to the rest of the hotel by a glass walkway. All bedrooms are fitted with an all-in-one remote control giving guests mastery over everything from the lighting and air conditioning to the TV/DVD, without having to move a muscle. Other bedroom features include fireplaces, CD players and safes as standard while the bathrooms comprise free-standing baths, large showers and underfloor heating. Larger rooms are split level, enjoy south facing views over the estate towards Glen Devon and some have balconies. Three of the bedrooms are specially designed for disabled guests. Aimed both at the leisure and corporate market Braid House should be a popular addition to the long-established resort.

Southern Gailes is a new Scottish links course due to open in April 2003. Designed by Kyle Phillips, the architect behind the much admired Kingsbarns Golf Links near St Andrews, Southern Gailes promises to be another good test of golf. The course offers some typical links features - revetted bunkers, gorse, heather, undulating fairways, rolling greens, a burn in play on 11 holes - yet like Carnoustie does not have sea views. Situated beside Western Gailes and Kilmarnock (Barassie) on the west coast of Scotland, Prestwick, Royal Troon and Glasgow Gailes are also only a short drive away. Originally intended to be a 'Pay and Play' course open to all, the exclusive Loch Lomond Golf Club has just bought it and a decision regarding visitor access is pending.
