NEWS UPDATE Golfers are intrepid characters: world news may sometimes depress them, with stock markets down and international affairs uncertain, but devotees of the great game are determined to get on with their lives. Which means traveling to enjoy the courses they love. And forward planning to ensure their availability. With this in mind, we should mention that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews will in 2004 celebrate its 250th anniversary. As well as hosting the British Amateur championship that year, a number of special events will lead to fewer tee times being available to the general public. Applications for advance reservations in 2004 will therefore close at the end of June 2003, so plan early for 2004. Better still, make a point of visiting in 2003! We have a number of tee times available throughout the summer, but book early to avoid disappointment. The same message applies to Ballybunion, which had allocated all available tee times for the entire 2003 season by early November 2002. Fortunately, we have slots, so contact us for details. After a one-off visit to Sea Island in 2002, The Links Cup returns to Turnberry in 2003 for its 10th Anniversary Tournament. This is destined to be a very special occasion, with a record entry of teams and a number of exciting features. Interestingly, of the nine events so far completed, we have only one two-time winner - Saucon Valley. And the winners' list makes impressive reading by any standards:
In a recent UK poll in "Golf World", Muirfield returned to top spot in Britain and Ireland after the hugely successful 2002 Open Championship. Royal County Down rose to second place. Clearly, hosting the British Seniors Championship has widened the appreciation of this fine course, which has, of course, for long been a favorite of AIG clients. Royal Birkdale has slipped to fifth position in the listings, behind Turnberry's Ailsa course and St Andrews Old. Loch Lomond features in sixth place - the only modern design in the top ten - followed by Portmarnock, Royal Portrush, Woodhall Spa and Ballybunion Old.
