PEOPLE AND PLACES
WatervilleTom Fazio has been invited to undertake alterations and improvements to Waterville, which has enjoyed worldwide acclaim since the Hackett design was opened in the early 1970's. "Everything about Waterville is truly spectacular" enthused Fazio, adding that he felt honored to have been appointed to the project. Completion is scheduled for Spring 2004 and no interruption to play this season (or next) is anticipated. Make a point of visiting next year!

Rosapenna's new course has opened. Designed by Pat Ruddy (The European and Druid's Glen) it carves its way through majestic dunes just inland of the original Old Tom Morris course, and, like its neighbor, has wonderful ocean views. The hotel is excellent, too. Not quite a Turnberry, perhaps, but a very comfortable, well-run establishment with spacious rooms and a fine kitchen.

Loch Lomond Golf Club has bought the Kyle Phillips-designed Southern Gailes near Troon and renamed it the Dundonald. It is seen as a wet weather venue for their members and will also extend the playing season right through the winter.

Royal Dornoch has unveiled its new course - The Struie - which benefits from five completely new holes, as well as from new greens and design modifications on many of the other holes of the "second" course. On flatter land than the championship course, the Struie is an excellent test, with fine greens, good lies and tight fairways. It is a great excuse to stay another night in Dornoch!
